Specifically, I was thinking of three partitions -- Vista, applications, and data. 1. Will partitioning degrade performance. No. 2. How much should be allocated to a Vista partition to get maximum speed. Since you are using NTFS partitioning will NOT affect speed. Your premise that partioning the drive will affect

I will recommend that you dual boot XP and Vista for now. It is a very easy thing to do if you have not done it before but if you have Vista already installed it would involve a format of your system (unless you know how to use some of the advanced disk partioning tools which is something I will not go into here).

Why Vista Install Problems with SATA Drives & SATA Raid?
But with the help of the excellent Mandriva partioning tool, I was able to rescue it, and continue the install without too much of a problem. I probably WON'T be upgrading to Vista, and may opt to just go totally Linux. I've nothing much against Windows, either, apart from it's poor security record,

also have the luxury of an extra slot in my motherboard and a free hard drive laying around to test linux flavours out as a dual boot option without messing with the C: drive partioning, so I am not doing the live CD method either. If you are not sold on Windows Vista, you need to begin scoping out alternatives.

Yea, just get Gparted (free Linux partioning tool) and have it destroy the partitons on the external HDD. Don't use Gparted to format the HDD though. Just do that in Vista instead. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php You can also get Gparted and many more useful tools on the Ultimate Boot CD.

I don't have enough experience with Vista to reply to your question, but I'd like to comment on the structure that you apparently like.
